Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, GA
Fort Yargo State Park spans 1,816-acre and is located in Winder, Georgia in-between Athens and Atlanta. This beautiful park, a short 20 min drive from the Oconee Connector West of downtown Athens, offers a 260-acre lake with a large swimming beach, fishing, and boat ramps along with 20.5 miles of trails for mountain bikers and hikers to test their endurance.
Accommodations
For Yargo is more than just a day-trip state park. “Overnight guests can choose from fully equipped cottages or cozy campsites. For a more unique experience, visitors can reserve lakeside “glamping” yurts, which are permanent canvas and wooden ‘tents.’ Each yurt has furniture and electricity inside and a fire ring, picnic table, and grill outside.” It is also a gorgeous option for outdoor weddings, family reunions, and/or other celebrations. There are various facilities for all budgets, ranging from lake-view pavilions to group shelters depending on your needs and wishes.
Activities
The park offers a wide range of free activities for adults and children, including biking (bike rentals available), fishing, boating, hiking, picnicking, and swimming. For a fee, they also offer disc golf or miniature golf. For water activities, they offer Jon Boat, Kayak, Canoe, Stand-Up Paddleboard & Pedal Boat rentals from April to October (weekends only in Apr, May, Aug, and Sept). Junior Ranger Program & Other Programs
Fort Yargo is proud to be a part of the GA State Parks Junior Ranger program! 59 different parks and historic sites in Georgia now participate in this amazing program where kids are given activity books and badges. Guests of any age can receive a badge and become a certified Junior Ranger - fun for the whole family! “Pick up a site-specific book by visiting any park or historic site.
